What the network records

Bitcoin is a public, replicated ledger. A transaction proposes that specific unspent outputs should be assigned to a new locking script. Nodes check the transaction against the protocol rules before relaying it, and miners place valid transactions into blocks. A block explorer is a view of this process, not the network itself.

Keys are the control boundary

A wallet does not store coins in a file. It stores or derives signing keys, then builds transactions that spend outputs. Anyone who can use the signing key can usually authorize a transfer; a customer-support chat cannot reverse a confirmed transaction. Keep recovery material offline and separate from ordinary passwords.

A safe first workflow

  • Write down the network and asset before copying an address.
  • Send a small test amount, then verify the destination and confirmation state independently.
  • Keep the transaction ID, purpose and source record so a future tax or support question has context.
