Consensus is a coordination process
A proof-of-stake network asks participants to lock or attest value under protocol rules. Validators propose or attest to blocks, and other nodes verify the messages. The exact roles, thresholds and penalties vary by network; an exchange’s “staking” label does not explain every operational detail.
What slashing can and cannot mean
Slashing is a protocol penalty for defined behavior such as conflicting attestations. It is different from an ordinary market loss, service outage or custody failure. Read the network’s current rules and the provider’s terms separately.
Questions for an overseas user
- Who controls the validator keys and withdrawal credentials?
- How are rewards, fees and tax records reported?
- What happens if access to the service is restricted in your country?
