Capture the event, not just the balance

Keep transaction IDs, timestamps, asset and network, destination or source, fees, and the purpose you assigned to the transfer. Export exchange statements in the provider’s native format and keep a read-only copy with the export date.

Separate facts from classifications

A wallet transfer, a trade, a gift, a staking reward and a service payment may have different treatment in your jurisdiction. Record what happened first, then ask a qualified local adviser how the rules apply. Do not infer tax treatment from a social-media summary.

Protect the record

  • Use a consistent timezone and currency conversion source.
  • Store encrypted backups and limit access to identity documents.
  • Reconcile the records periodically and note corrections rather than silently overwriting the original.
