A hardware wallet reduces some signing exposure, but it does not remove supply-chain risk or human error. A device can be genuine yet used with a fake application, or a second-hand unit can arrive with someone else’s recovery phrase. For an overseas buyer, shipping agents, customs, and marketplace listings add more handoffs. This guide gives a device-authenticity sequence that keeps the recovery secret private and treats every warning as evidence to investigate.

Choose the official route

Buy through the manufacturer’s official store or an explicitly authorized reseller, then retain the order record and serial information without publishing it. Marketplace ratings are not proof of authorization. Check the vendor’s current list because resellers and regional distributors change. If customs packaging is opened, document the condition and contact official support through a saved domain before initializing the device.

Inspect seals without trusting them

A seal can be copied, so an intact box is only one signal. Look for unexpected labels, altered cables, missing instructions, and a device that powers on before the official setup. Never accept a recovery phrase printed on a card or included in a message. The correct initialization flow generates words on the device and asks you to confirm them. A seller who supplies the phrase can control every account derived from it.

Verify firmware and application pairing

Install the companion application from the official channel and compare the device model, firmware version, and update notice. Confirm the device’s own screen when it asks for a firmware update or signs a transaction. A computer display can be manipulated; the hardware screen is an independent review surface. If an application asks for the seed phrase to “synchronize,” close it and report the domain through official support.

Use an address-confirmation test

After initialization, write down a receiving address and compare it on the device screen. Send only a small amount that fits your risk boundary, then verify the transaction on a public explorer. This tests the complete path without assuming that a successful login proves authenticity. Record the network and address type. Do not reuse a test seed for meaningful funds if the device or setup process remains uncertain.

Plan for regional support

Support policies may differ by country, language, and distributor. Save the warranty and return terms before opening the package, and use the exact device model in a support ticket. Genuine support will not ask for the recovery phrase, PIN, or unrestricted remote access. If a translation makes a request ambiguous, read the original wording and ask for clarification through the official channel rather than using a search result or social-media account.

Keep evidence separate from secrets

Store invoices, serial notes, firmware versions, and public addresses in a record that excludes the recovery phrase. Photographing a seed is unsafe because cloud backups and phone galleries sync automatically. If a device fails, restore only in a controlled environment using the original secret. The purpose of authenticity checks is to reduce uncertainty before signing, not to make a hardware device an unquestioned guarantee.

Operational worksheet

Treat the first initialization as a controlled ceremony. Two people can inspect the unopened package and record only non-secret details; one person should read the device screen while another checks the official instructions. Confirm that firmware is installed through the vendor application and that the device asks you to write its generated words yourself. A tiny receive test verifies the address path, while a tiny send test is optional and should follow the device’s exact confirmation screen. Keep the order receipt, warranty terms, and serial note in a private archive. If a support contact asks for words, PIN, or remote-control software, stop and record the request as an incident. Authenticity is a chain of evidence from seller to firmware to signing screen, not a sticker or a high marketplace rating.

If the device is returned or replaced, reset it according to the manufacturer instructions and revoke any public test labels that could confuse the next setup. Keep the receipt and support ticket, but remove shipping labels that expose a home address. The chain from package to firmware to signed address should be understandable to a person who did not buy the device.
